A message from Varo:
“We have never spent such a long amount of time without being able to play for and with other people. Sessions like McNeills, The Cobblestone, Walshe’s, where you go to play with your friends or just listen to them play over a pint were/are a very big part of traditional Irish music and an important part of our lives as traditional musicians.
After 3 months of lockdown, not knowing when this could happen again, we needed to find a way to create something but not only by making a new VARO album but by creating a context of musical encounters with people we used to share sessions with.
Also, the crisis that the world is going through at the moment is having such a big impact on people’s lives, not only regarding work or wearing a mask but everything from the very basics of social life to the way society is being run at the moment. So we decided to do something that would bring us happiness in the making and that would be meaningful in the times we’re living. ”
VARO - COLLABORATION PROJECT FUNDRAISING
THE PROJECT
Our idea was born from the context of isolation we have all experienced, the lack of gigs, perspectives, and the longing to be able to play together with bands who are part of the Irish Traditional and Folk music scenes, and with whom we used to play alongside before the COVID crisis.
Thinking of a way of staying connected to our musical friends and creating something different during these strange new times, we decided to ask 11 acts to work with us on a collaboration video series and album recording.
THE ARTISTS AND SONGS
The acts involved in this project with us are:
Ian Lynch (Lankum), Anna Mieke, Lemoncello, Junior Brother, Landless, John Francis Flynn, Slow Moving Clouds & Branwen, Inni K, Alfi, Niamh Bury, Cormac Mac Diarmada (Lankum) & Ruth Clinton.
With each act we chose to work on a traditional song that isn't part of either of our repertoires, so it would be a brand new song for all of us and we could combine our musical influences to create something unique for this project.
In terms of material, we have been researching songs and chosen topics somehow related to things we could have experienced during the lockdown.
VIDEOS SERIES AND ALBUM RECORDING
We are planning on making a series of 11 live video performances, shot in 11 different locations in Dublin and in the surrounding counties.
The videos will be released between October and December 2020.
The project will be further extended into the making of an after lockdown collaboration album and will be produced by John Spud Murphy ( Lankum, Crash Ensemble, Katie Kim).
FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
We are running a Fundraising Campaign to raise the funds needed for the technical sides of this production, which include :
Filmmaker fee + Lighting Equipment (11 videos)
Sound Engineer Fee (Live Videos + Album Recording)
Recording Studio Fee
Mixing Fee
Mastering Fee

THANKS
Some of you have supported us before to help us fund our debut album ‘Varo’ and we are extremely grateful. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We hope that you will be excited by this project as much as all of us involved and that you will decide to help us, by either donating, getting a reward or just sharing this page as much as possible.
Thank you sincerely for reading this, and please...share far and wide!
We can’t wait to bring these new songs into the world.
